A Hockeymom for Hockeytown
August 30, 2008
Michigan is a state Barack Obama must win. If he loses Michigan, the election is over. Since 1992, Michigan has always voted with the Democrats.
- 1992 – they won by 8%
- 1996 – they won by 13%
- 2000 – they won by 5%
- 2004 – they won by 3%
Michigan is a conservative state. If you take away Washtenaw (Ann Arbor) and Wayne (Detroit) county, the past two elections would have resulted in a GOP victory. However, I believe Senator McCain’s choice of Alaska governor Sarah Palin may very well push Michigan into the red category! All recent polls show Barack Obama with a slight lead over John McCain.
Three polls of likely voters show Obama with a 4.3% average:
- Detroit News – August 18-21 – 43/41 +2
- Detroit Free Press – August 17-20 – 46/39 +7
- Rasmussen – August 7th – 49/45 +4
Hockeymom wins over Hockeytown
This will be the headline over the next few weeks. As Michigan meets Sarah Palin, Michigan will fall in love. And one of the many reasons will be our common affection for hockey. Detroit is called Hockeytown for a reason. We love the sport and everything it represents. The embrace of Sarah Palin is natural fit for voters of this Great Lake State! The Detroit Red Wings are the National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup Champions. Just picture Governor Palin visiting Michigan and being greeted with Lord Stanley. She will be genuinely excited and Michiganders will connect with this emotion!
Add this together with the scandals of Detroit’s Democrat mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick and failed leadership of Michigan’s Democrat Governor Jennifer Granholm. Michigan will look to Republicans for a different direction, a change if you will.
Update – September 17, 2008 - Polls are still close in Michigan, 48-45…

“If you take away Washtenaw (Ann Arbor) and Wayne (Detroit) county, the past two elections would have resulted in a GOP victory.”
If you take out the cities in just about every state the GOP would win. Let’s try and avoid misleading statistics and look at what is important.
It is important that the country learns about Sarah so they can make an informed choice. Sad as it is, it is more likely that it has been in the recent past that she will get the constitutional promotion – so we need to know who she is and what she stands for.
My point was, if those cities can move into McCain’s column, the election is over and Obama loses. I feel McCain will get a big bounce in Michigan after our local media starts to cover Sarah Palin.
Great analysis Jeff. It will be fascinating to see if it pans out.
Do you think for one SECOND Michigan is going to vote for someone who tried to fire a cop for a personal reason, then fired the higher up who refused? Sarah Palin is a right-wing version of Kwame……and we DO NOT NEED SOMEONE LIKE THAT RUNNING THE US!!!!!!!
Give me a break, Mark. The facts of “troopergate” are on the side of Palin. Firstly, the cop was a bad cop who drank on the job and tasered young children. Secondly, Palin has worked with the investigation and shown transparency that Michigan voters could only dream of. Finally, it’s not that big of a deal, if it were her approval rating wouldn’t be in the 80s.
