Obama, not Roberts screwed up the Oath

January 21, 2009

Watch the clip and you will see it was President Obama who first, impatiently jumped on Chief Justice Robert’s words set the train wreck of an oath in motion.

And sure Robert’s inatailly left out the word “faithfully,” – but when he corrected it, Obama ignored it!

  1. Yup, and the Holocaust didn’t really happen and 9/11 didn’t really happen and the moon landing was filmed in a studio in Arizona………………

  2. And you never really watched the video.

  3. Actually, I saw it live. It was Roberts who messed it up, even the second time when you think “Obama ignored it” in this piece of revisionism.

But my larger question is…………..in the grand scale of all the issues facing our leaders today, why do you care? I mean, after all, we just got done with a President who had more mispeaks than an old Norm Crosby act.

  4. And new a new president that wants to give him a run for his money…

  5. The Oath is given in Article II, Section 1 (last line), of the Constitution:

“I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my Ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Listen to it again. They both got it wrong, Roberts first, and more badly. Roberts said “the Office of President TO the United States faithfully” (was I the only one who heard the “to”?). It doesn’t really matter, but Obama retook the oath the next day anyway, just to be safe.

According to Jeffrey Rosen, a US constitutional law expert and professor at George Washington University in Washington, “Lots of people have flubbed the oath, perhaps most memorably Chief Justice (William Howard) Taft, who sort of riffed and then made up his own” upon swearing in then-president Herbert Hoover.

And for the record, the word “God” isn’t actually in the constitution. Just saying.
