Time Machine on your terms

January 30, 2009

One of the biggest complaint about Apple’s Time Machine is the lack of control. This has lead many third party applications to develop ways to give the user more ways to use this awesome feature. Normally, when you turn Time Machine on, it will make back ups of your computer every hour. However, I have discovered a simple way to back up my Mac with Time Machine whenever you want it done:

Step 1: Open Time Machine Preferences.
Step 2: Check the box that says, “Show Time Machine Status in Menu Bar”
Step 3: Toggle Time Machine “off
Step 4: In your Menu Bar click on “Back Up Now” using the Time Machine icon
Step 5: Repeat step 4 every time you want to back up your Mac
