Ohio woman pleads guilty in over-exercising death

February 15, 2009

CHARDON, Ohio (AP) – A woman has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide for exercising her 73-year-old husband to death in a swimming pool, repeatedly refusing to let him leave the water.

Surveillance video showed Christine Newton-John, 41, pulling James Mason around the pool by his arms and legs, said Middlefield police Chief Joseph Stehlik. (Read Full Article).

I discovered this story on reddit and was surprised at the reaction.  First, one reader correctly pointed out how as you read the article it becomes more and more unbelievable. Or as he puts it:

“exercising her 73-year-old husband to death in a swimming pool, repeatedly refusing to let him leave the water”

One WTF.

“Christine Newton-John, 41″

Two WTF.

“The chief said he counted 43 times in which Newton-John prevented her husband from leaving the water”

Three WTF.

“The video would have had a profound effect on a jury, Geauga County Prosecutor David Joyce said. But that wouldn’t have been enough for a conviction if Newton-John had been charged with murder.”

Four WTF.

“He knew her as John Vallandingham before she had gender reassignment surgery in 1993″

Five WTF.

“and changed her name in honor of the singer and star of the hit movie version of the musical “Grease.”"

Six WTF.

“Kentucky, where people can change their gender on their birth certificate’

And the second shocking thing, was all of the commenters who said they used to kill their sim characters this way! Look at some of these comments:

“I preferred trapping them in a really small room with nothing in it except for that scary clown painting and letting them suffer for a few days until they died.”

“I had a big fat Sim named “The collector” whose sole purpose was to get people into the smallest room possible, sell the door and then replace it with a window. There was a central room with rows of these windows with chairs in front of each of them, and he would sit and watch people suffer and die slowly and move on to watch the next victim. I have no idea how people play the Sims normally.”

“Yeah, I used to love throwing a party then throw everyone in the pool (move_objects on) and put all their tombstones on my front lawn.”

“Check out http://www.bradleysalmanac.com/simstorture.htm”

Wow.

Extinct ibex is resurrected by cloning

January 31, 2009

“The Pyrenean ibex, a form of wild mountain goat, was officially declared extinct in 2000 when the last-known animal of its kind was found dead in northern Spain.

Shortly before its death, scientists preserved skin samples of the goat, a subspecies of the Spanish ibex that live in mountain ranges across the country, in liquid nitrogen.

Using DNA taken from these skin samples, the scientists were able to replace the genetic material in eggs from domestic goats, to clone a female Pyrenean ibex, or bucardo as they are known. It is the first time an extinct animal has been cloned.

Sadly, the newborn ibex kid died shortly after birth due to physical defects in its lungs. Other cloned animals, including sheep, have been born with similar lung defects.” (full article)

Ibex today, what will it be tomorrow? The story makes me think of Michael Crichton famous character, Dr. Ian Malcolm and his famous line form Jurassic Park, “this is no species that was obliterated by deforestation or the building of a dam. Dinosaurs had their shot.  Nature selected them for extinction.”

Fake CNN broadcast from 1991, Gulf War

November 20, 2008

Today were going to focus on the good, the bad and the ugly from CNN’s Journalism department.

The bad - I’m not sure if this is fake or not. Because of that, it’s just bad. However, if this really did air, then it’s very, very ugly.

Will Detroit Mayor Be Removed?

September 2, 2008

Judge Robert Ziolkowski is set to announce any minute if Michigan governor, Jennifer Granholm can begin a hearing Wednesday on whether to force Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick out of office. I will have video of the announcement as soon as I can. Kilpatrick’s lawyers want to delay the hearing until after the Mayor’s two criminal trials are complete.

What do you think will happen?

Update 11:05am – The governor’s hearing will begin! The mayor’s request to delay the hearing has been denied. The video is boring, i may not post it. Nothing really happened.

Fox News attacks CNN

August 25, 2008

Great ad from Fox News. They are running it in the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal the next two weeks. The pew poll Fox News got their research from. I like how they ignore MSNBC like they don’t even exist.

Bush plan would blunt state birth control law

August 23, 2008

Great news from President Bush. The SFGate reports:

A proposed Bush administration regulation on contraception and abortion would stop California from enforcing a state law that requires Catholic hospitals and charities to provide birth control coverage for thousands of female employees, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and family-planning advocates said Wednesday.

The U.S. Health and Human Services Department regulation, still in draft form, would define abortion as including certain methods of contraception and would prohibit states and other recipients of federal funds from penalizing health care workers who refused to provide those services because of religious or moral beliefs.
Violators would forfeit federal health care funds, which in California amount to as much as $37 billion a year.

Why isn’t Casey Anthony out of jail?

August 20, 2008

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad she’s not out of jail. However we were told she could be out as soon as Monday. However because of various red tape, in jail she sits. Fox News talks with the bail bondsmen that is springing her.

White Flag Mentality of Europe

August 15, 2008

“There’s a routine now whenever some unspeakable act of aggression is visited upon us or our allies by murderous fanatics or authoritarian regimes. While the enemy takes a victory lap, we compete in a shameful medley relay of apologetics, defeatism and surrender. The initial reaction is almost always self-blame and an expression of sympathetic explanation for the aggressor’s actions.” – Gerard Baker

Gerard Baker has a wonderful piece written today on Times Online. Check it out.
