“The Pyrenean ibex, a form of wild mountain goat, was officially declared extinct in 2000 when the last-known animal of its kind was found dead in northern Spain.
Shortly before its death, scientists preserved skin samples of the goat, a subspecies of the Spanish ibex that live in mountain ranges across the country, in liquid nitrogen.
Using DNA taken from these skin samples, the scientists were able to replace the genetic material in eggs from domestic goats, to clone a female Pyrenean ibex, or bucardo as they are known. It is the first time an extinct animal has been cloned.
Sadly, the newborn ibex kid died shortly after birth due to physical defects in its lungs. Other cloned animals, including sheep, have been born with similar lung defects.” (full article)
Ibex today, what will it be tomorrow? The story makes me think of Michael Crichton famous character, Dr. Ian Malcolm and his famous line form Jurassic Park, “this is no species that was obliterated by deforestation or the building of a dam. Dinosaurs had their shot. Nature selected them for extinction.”
Judge Robert Ziolkowski is set to announce any minute if Michigan governor, Jennifer Granholm can begin a hearing Wednesday on whether to force Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick out of office. I will have video of the announcement as soon as I can. Kilpatrick’s lawyers want to delay the hearing until after the Mayor’s two criminal trials are complete.
What do you think will happen?
Update 11:05am – The governor’s hearing will begin! The mayor’s request to delay the hearing has been denied. The video is boring, i may not post it. Nothing really happened.
Fox and Friends had Tony Padilla on their show this morning. He has done a complete 180 and now believes Caylee Anthony is dead. There is a planned protest out side the Anthony house on Monday. My bet is she will be back in jail before then.
Update – Saturday, August 29, 2008 - I was right, it’s saturday night and she has been arrested again. Watch the video here.
Great ad from Fox News. They are running it in the Washington Post and the Wall Street Journal the next two weeks. The pew poll Fox News got their research from. I like how they ignore MSNBC like they don’t even exist.
“Japanese scientists said Friday they had derived stem cells from wisdom teeth, opening another way to study deadly diseases without the ethical controversy of using embryos.”
A proposed Bush administration regulation on contraception and abortion would stop California from enforcing a state law that requires Catholic hospitals and charities to provide birth control coverage for thousands of female employees, state Attorney General Jerry Brown and family-planning advocates said Wednesday.
The U.S. Health and Human Services Department regulation, still in draft form, would define abortion as including certain methods of contraception and would prohibit states and other recipients of federal funds from penalizing health care workers who refused to provide those services because of religious or moral beliefs.
Violators would forfeit federal health care funds, which in California amount to as much as $37 billion a year.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad she’s not out of jail. However we were told she could be out as soon as Monday. However because of various red tape, in jail she sits. Fox News talks with the bail bondsmen that is springing her.
Detroit’s Democrat mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick has a preliminary hearing right now to determine if there is enough evidence for the case to go to trial. Let’s watch and discuss it together!
Update – Here are the videos from todays hearing.
The debate over the release of the audio tapes by the defense team.
“There’s a routine now whenever some unspeakable act of aggression is visited upon us or our allies by murderous fanatics or authoritarian regimes. While the enemy takes a victory lap, we compete in a shameful medley relay of apologetics, defeatism and surrender. The initial reaction is almost always self-blame and an expression of sympathetic explanation for the aggressor’s actions.” – Gerard Baker
Gerard Baker has a wonderful piece written today on Times Online. Check it out.
